Live illustration as active listening

Live illustrator Vicky Hughes demonstrates live illustration as active listening.

You’ve likely heard of active listening, where the focus is on truly understanding the speaker rather than waiting for your turn to talk. Over the last few years, I’ve discovered that live illustrating takes this concept to the next level.

Graphic recording is validating

When I’m graphic recording at an event, I’m not just listening to respond; I’m listening to summarize, reflect, and capture the essence of what’s being said. This process ensures that the key points and ideas are distilled into a visual narrative that resonates with your audience.

One of the most rewarding moments is when I display the live illustration at the end of the day, and someone says, “That’s exactly what I said! That’s my voice, my point.” It’s a moment of validation - they feel heard, seen, and understood.

Drawing as a state of flow

You might wonder, “Isn’t it exhausting to listen and draw all day?” Surprisingly, it’s quite the opposite. Drawing puts me in a state of flow, where the words and ideas seem to flow through me and onto the page. It’s a deeply rewarding form of concentration and listening, much like the focus you might experience while painting, cooking, or immersed in your own work.

For me, live drawing is a win-win. I get to immerse myself in the flow, learn something new, and enjoy my day. For you and your event attendees, it’s an opportunity to have your ideas summarized, your voices heard, and your thoughts reflected back in a visually engaging way.

Listening out for key themes

While I can’t capture every single word, I listen for recurring themes and weave them into the illustration. This process has not only enhanced my listening skills but also built up my ability to connect with stories and translate them into imagery.

Live illustration for your event

If you’re looking to make your event more engaging and memorable, live illustration or graphic recording could be the perfect addition. It’s a unique way to ensure your attendees feel valued and your key messages are communicated effectively.
